Heroic Tarot: The Complete X-Men Tarot Series

Professor X - Ace of Diamonds

Greetings, dear reader! Welcome to my Heroic Tarot process featuring my award-winning X-Men cards!

The X-Men playing card deck is adorned with images of Marvel’s Merry Mutants.  I have created a system combining traditional Minor Arcana meaning with my vast knowledge of X-Men comic book stories.  The archetypal roles the X-Men represent bring the energy of the missing Major Arcana to the overall calculation.  I reveal the superheroic tales relevant to your path.   This dual reading is amplified by the elemental nature of whatever suit is pulled in addition to the numerological/feudal court energy contained therein.

I invite you to take a look at all of the cards featured and compare my comic-based interpretations with how they relate to traditional tarot definitions. Here they are in order:

Heroic Tarot Tuesday: Magneto, Sabretooth, Mr. Sinister & Apocalypse

Magneto by Jim Lee

Greetings, dear reader! This post is the eigth in a series revealing my Heroic Tarot process.  Today we look at four distinctive shadowy mutants!

This dual reading is amplified by the elemental nature of whatever suit is pulled in addition to the numeralogical/feudal court energy contained therein.

One of the interesting aspects of the X-Men cards is that every character gets to be represented four times.  However, there are four different characters on all of the Eights!  Each card features four prominent antagonists from X-Men mythology:  Magneto, Sabretooth, Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse.  Due to their “bad guy” status, we will be looking at each character as a Shadow Guide.

A Shadow Guide is a spirit teacher that activates our fears in order for us to transcend them.  They represent a lesson that we need to learn in order to let go of negativity.   A Shadow Guide encourages us to return to the heroic path by activating change in our thoughts and actions.

Note: I will be referring to each card by their traditional tarot names, although I will provide the equivalent playing card terms under each image.

Storm Sunday: Marc Silvestri, Part II

Silvestri_Swim suit Marvel X-Women

The art of Marc Silvestri was a huge influence on me as a young man.  I fell in love with his leggy supermodel heroines and glamour infused narrative style.  His mohawk Storm, tanned Dazzler and corrupt Madelyne Pryor are forever burned into my brain.  He has a way of making everyone, men and women, so pretty.  So, it’s a bit strange that I haven’t had a spotlight on him since this post in 2008!  Let’s rectify that omission by looking at a lot of original artwork!  Above, we see the X-Women take some time to relax in a tropical paradise.  From left to right, Storm, Jean Grey, Rogue, Psylocke, Rachel (above), Meggan, Kitty Pryde and Lockheed.  That’s a bevy of bathing beauties!

Storm Sunday Extra: Felipe Massafera

x-men by felipe massafera

Artist Felipe Massafera created this wonderful painting which features many classic X-Men heroes and villains.  Sharing center stage are Storm and Dark (!) Phoenix and just look at all of that hair!  I’m a bit baffled as to why Storm is wearing her classic costume while folks like Psylocke and Bishop are in their 90s era costumes.  And then there’s Phoenix in her red costume (which means she’s evil) instead of her green one (which means she’s good) just floating in the midst of the good guys.  It’s a bit jarring but every time I start to continuity nitpick, the sheer beauty of this artwork shuts me up my inner critic.

White Queen Wednesday: JJ Kirby

An Emma Frost Salon
by Ken Kneisel

xbabies1

Welcome to White Queen Wednesday, gentle reader. Today I would like to spotlight this ebullient X-Babies commission drawn by Juvaun “JJ” Kirby featuring Emma Frost and lots of other mutants besides.

Even as a cute little moppet, Emma still has attitude to spare. I love her self-satisfied smirk.

Everything about this amazing commission is just adorable. From the wind-up Nimrod toy to Nightcrawler perched atop Colossus’s shoulder to pouty emo Rogue, even those disgusting space roaches the Brood manage to look downright cuddly!

Here is a comparison between the original black and white linework and finished color art.

Juvaun “JJ” Kirby is actually one of my very favorite artists, although he hasn’t drawn an awful lot of comics. He drew a couple of X-Babies one-shots for Marvel called Murderama and X-Babies Reborn, along with some Backlash and DV8 back in the 90s and more recently the New Dynamix miniseries for Wildstorm. His artwork is incredibly dynamic and expressive and I hope to see him draw more comics someday!

Thank you for joining me for this fun little lighthearted edition of White Queen Wednesday, gentle reader. I will be back next week with more to discuss.
