The Hierophant is the fifth Major Arcana card of the Tarot and as such represents knowledge and guidance, both of the material world and the spiritual.  Have you ever met a random stranger whose wisdom completely spoke to your situation in an eerily prophetic way?  That is the power of the Hierophant at work.  What is your comfort level with authority figures and how do you handle power?  How are you both student and teacher in your life?  What part does tradition or ritual play in your effectiveness in creating structure?  These questions are especially important to us all as 2012 is the Year of the Hierophant!

Change, action and challenge are a few of the aspects associated with the number five and a Hierophant year will be rife with adversity.  Which means we will all be honing our abilities to problem solve.  2012 will be a year in which the stability we created last year will be tested.  The best way to work with this is trust your inner guides.  Like the willow tree, we will all have to find ways to bend without breaking as harsh winds blow around us.  Examine your traditions and decide which still apply to the new circumstances surrounding you.  Strictly adhering to your past conventions will trip you up more than usual, so making small adjustments as your situations shift will benefit you much more in the long run.

Many people go back to school or receive new training in a Hierophant year.  Enhancing our professional skill sets is of the utmost importance now.  Each of us has a sage within who examines our lessons to find the knowledge we need to continue on our path.  When we apply this knowledge it becomes wisdom.  Question your beliefs and ask which still work for you.  The best way to determine this is to look carefully at which of your values promote growth instead of limiting it.

People will be looking for teachers this year and they may look to you for guidance.  Conversely, you may be looking to others for leadership.  Make sure that whatever information you share comes from the heart.  Reciting facts in a mechanical manner will not create the needed connections.  If you align your spiritual self with your intelligence you will help yourself as well as assist others.

The Hierophant year can certainly be a trying time as we examine the role of authority in our lives, learn which traditions represent our true selves, and teach in order to learn.  Be patient and compassionate with yourself and others as you learn to understand your power in discovering your own truth.

For the last two years, Heroic Tarot has provided comprehensive readings to a diverse clientele from San Francisco and beyond!   As we adventure into 2012, I am committed to bringing you Introspection, Intuition and Insight more than ever.  To celebrate Heroic Tarot’s birthday, I am offering a new reading that will focus on what you can expect to encounter in 2012!

This new reading–called The Triumph Reading–will examine which Major Arcana cards correspond to your Birth Year, and the lessons that they bring to your life.  Looking at the challenges associated with 2012 will open you up to more magickal possibilities!

I will continue to offer my Classic Individual Readings answering questions micro and macro at the regular rate of $65 for one hour.  Classic Individual Readings use the entire Tarot deck, result in a large spread and can address specific questions in a more conversational manner.

The Triumph Reading also lasts an hour, but only uses the Major Arcana cards corresponding to your birth date and your challenges in 2012.  Throughout the month of January, I am offering The Triumph Reading at a special introductory price of $50!*

We conclude our recent Michael Golden appreciation with a look at Golden’s interpretation of the X-Men’s Storm!  Above, an inked sketch by the master himself.  Love the pose, the facial structure and the lighting on her costume.  Golden designs Ororo’s tiara much larger than it is usually depicted, but the proportions are great overall.  And like Dave Cockrum (Storm’s creator), Golden gives Storm a massive mane of hair!

This image of Storm by Golden is really something!  I like the structure of the tiara much better in this sketch, and the chiaroscuro of the cape, bikini and boots is truly beautiful.  Storm’s expression is one of seriousness and her power is undeniable.  The wispy tendrils of her hair wrapping around her cape are the most unique detail of this piece.  I do not recall ever seeing anyone draw her hair this way before.  What do you think about this interpretation, dear reader?

We continue our Michael Golden appreciation with more amazing artwork by the modern master!  Today we look at old school Marvel Comics images as well as convention sketches and commissions! Click below to marvel (pun intended) at Rogue (Michael Golden co-created her!) Doctor Strange, Clea, and more!  Above, 1980s Marvel heroes (and anti-heroes, we see you Punisher and Elektra) super-spar around a statue.

Michael Golden drew the cover to The X-Men Companion featuring Marvel’s mutants in their classic togs of the 80s.  Everyone has some kind of “V” design element on their costume.  The lines on Colossus, Nightcrawler, Wolverine and Kitty Pryde’s upper torsos are pretty obvious, but the shape of Cyclops’ undershorts and Storm’s bikini bottom are also inverted chevrons.  I appreciate how Golden uses these lines to accentuate their superheroic anatomy. Golden’s X-Men are solid, dynamic and visually stunning.

Michael Golden co-created Rogue, the mutant with the ability to steal the powers and memories of anyone she touches.  She debuted in Avengers Annual #10 as a villain who fought (and won) a battle against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!  The above sketch depicts Rogue in her Brotherhood of Evil days (led by her foster mother Mystique).  The maniacal smile as she reaches out with her ungloved hand is a great portrait of the early days of Rogue.

In this beautiful sketch, Michael Golden draws his creation in a costume designed by Chris Bachalo.  The slight hunch in her posture, the gleam in her eyes and the slight smile are perfect.  Considering her powers, drawing Rogue with a hint of menace makes a lot of sense to me.  Check out the shadow of her ungloved hand on her cloak.  Genius!

I posted the color version of this 80s Marvel Comic house ad already, but I had to share the black and white version as well!  Such a great group of characters!

I adore the The Defenders and this cover by Golden featuring Ghost Rider while Hellcat, Son of Satan, Doctor Strange and Valkyrie look on is stunning!

Michael Golden drew the cover for this 1996 Generation X Annual.  I love the action of this double spread, but my favorite part has to be his depiction of the White Queen as she holds on to Chamber.  Gorgeous!

This sketch of Doctor Stephen Strange and his disciple and lover Clea captures the love and mysticism that these two share.  Michael Golden always gives his characters life, especially in the eyes.

Golden is no stranger to the wonders of chiaroscuro!  He expertly manipulates light and dark to render a magickally moody Doctor Strange!

His Art Nouveau skills are up to par as well as Clea weaves a spell with snakes made of smoke!  Such grace and beauty befit this sorceress!

Here the classic occult couple cast conjurations!

Doctor Strange looks like he could give Vincent Price a run for his money in this detailed drawing!
