Happy Beltane to you, dear reader!  May all of the rites of spring inspire you to bring growth and creative expansion to all of the seeds you have been planting this year!  May you dance with the sweetest of friends and celebrate the wondrous gifts that life brings us!  Remember to give gratitude for all of the challenges as well as the blessings!

I chose to feature the Three of Cups this month because it reminds me of the Beltane Maypole Ritual that so many communities still celebrate today.  Traditionally the Three of Cups represents the gift of friendship and good cheer!  It is a time to honor our mutual achievements and work with one another to manifest our new goals.  Some folks see the Triple Goddess in this card and some see an image of the Muses.  However you look at it, this card lets us know it is time to throw off our sorrow and dance!

Ah, to be a Fool for April–to skip along the springtime blossoms with the wisdom and whimsy of youth!  Although the origins of the prankster holiday April Fools Day are shrouded in mystery (much like the Tarot)–and culturally the word “fool” usually refers to someone easily duped or tricked–the archetype of the Fool has a much richer history:

In her book, Tarot Wisdom: Spiritual Teachings and Deeper Meanings, Rachel Pollack reveals:

The iconic modern image of the Fool as a joyous innocent setting off on a journey comes originally from the Rider deck of Arthur Edward Waite and Pamela Coleman Smith. Arms out, happy and carefree, the Fool appears about to step off a cliff. He is fearless, simply because he has never learned to be afraid.

The Fool is the childlike nature in all of us that trusts with an open heart. Since he makes his choices based on love, not out of fear, he finds his needs met by the Universe.  He is a symbol of new beginnings and second chances.  However, as Pollack says:

…the fool as a free spirit is not just a concept. If we can identify with the Fool and allow the card to spark some of that spontaneity in ourselves, we too can do what is necessary in the right moment.

The month of March often brings to mind luck, both positive (Saint Patrick’s Day) and negative (the Ides of March).  Luck is akin to our ideas about destiny or karma, the notion that whatever we do comes back to us (The Wiccan Rede).  The Wheel of Fortune (picture above from The Cosmic Tarot) is the tenth Major Arcana card and specifically speaks to the cycles of fortune and poverty, life and death.  The Wheel brings the possibilities for rewards from our endeavors.  The Wheel turns and we learn from change.  We take risks and make decisions that affect our lives far beyond what we can see in the present.  In her book Who Are You In The Tarot?, Mary K. Greer says, “Above all, the Wheel of Fortune shows flexibility and the ability to grasp opportunities when they happen..ride the low points with as much ease as you ride the crests, knowing that such extremes are temporary and you will endure.”

Considering it is the shortest month of the year, February certainly has a lot going on!  We’ve got Candlemas, President’s Day, Fat Tuesday, Ash Wednesday, Leap Day, and it’s Black History Month!  And of course, there’s that ubiquitous hearts and flowers celebration known as Valentine’s Day!  In the above image (taken by Christine Donley), I am holding the 2 of Cups, a card representing the healing power of love and the importance of connecting with others.  Whether or not you are in a romantic partnership, February is a great time to honor your compassionate qualities in regards to your Self as all of our relationships mirror our own inner balance.  By aligning our conscious and unconscious aspects we can reconcile internal and external oppositions.  How does your spirit influence your passion?  Conversely, how does your passion inspire your spirituality?

The Hierophant is the fifth Major Arcana card of the Tarot and as such represents knowledge and guidance, both of the material world and the spiritual.  Have you ever met a random stranger whose wisdom completely spoke to your situation in an eerily prophetic way?  That is the power of the Hierophant at work.  What is your comfort level with authority figures and how do you handle power?  How are you both student and teacher in your life?  What part does tradition or ritual play in your effectiveness in creating structure?  These questions are especially important to us all as 2012 is the Year of the Hierophant!

Change, action and challenge are a few of the aspects associated with the number five and a Hierophant year will be rife with adversity.  Which means we will all be honing our abilities to problem solve.  2012 will be a year in which the stability we created last year will be tested.  The best way to work with this is trust your inner guides.  Like the willow tree, we will all have to find ways to bend without breaking as harsh winds blow around us.  Examine your traditions and decide which still apply to the new circumstances surrounding you.  Strictly adhering to your past conventions will trip you up more than usual, so making small adjustments as your situations shift will benefit you much more in the long run.

Many people go back to school or receive new training in a Hierophant year.  Enhancing our professional skill sets is of the utmost importance now.  Each of us has a sage within who examines our lessons to find the knowledge we need to continue on our path.  When we apply this knowledge it becomes wisdom.  Question your beliefs and ask which still work for you.  The best way to determine this is to look carefully at which of your values promote growth instead of limiting it.

People will be looking for teachers this year and they may look to you for guidance.  Conversely, you may be looking to others for leadership.  Make sure that whatever information you share comes from the heart.  Reciting facts in a mechanical manner will not create the needed connections.  If you align your spiritual self with your intelligence you will help yourself as well as assist others.

The Hierophant year can certainly be a trying time as we examine the role of authority in our lives, learn which traditions represent our true selves, and teach in order to learn.  Be patient and compassionate with yourself and others as you learn to understand your power in discovering your own truth.

This new reading–called The Triumph Reading–will examine which Major Arcana cards correspond to your Birth Year, and the lessons that they bring to your life.  Looking at the challenges associated with 2012 will open you up to more magickal possibilities!
