“For it is in giving that we receive.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi
Happy November, dear ones! This month Heroic Tarot celebrates the nature of generosity in the form of the Six of Pentacles! This Minor Arcana card represents material resource and the ability to open ourselves to the flow of abundance in our lives. The Six of Pentacles teaches us to become more charitable as we find a balance between individual and community needs. Michele Morgan, in her book A Magical Course in Tarot, puts it succinctly when she says, “To give, without expectation of return, will make you rich indeed.”
The Six of Pentacles also contains a message about the relationship between the giver and the receiver. Rachel Pollack, in her book Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, states:
Many people will only accept limited ‘gifts’ from others. A display of strong emotions, for instance, may embarrass or scare them. The same may hold true for people who resent ‘charity’ and put any offer of help in that category. Therefore the Six of Pentacles may indicate giving people what they are able to receive.
Oftentimes, the challenge lies in understanding whether the gifts we offer others are appropriate. When we own the projections of our fears and requirements, we gain clarity regarding our own or someone else’s needs. Sometimes all we need to get back on track is to honor the the things that are working in our lives. Generosity and gratitude go hand in hand. Elizabeth Gilbert, in her book Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia, says:
In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it’s wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.
