Marvel recently sent out an Official Press Release about some pretty cool variant covers they have planned to celebrate their newest X-Men event:
Just in time for X-Men: First To Last, the next big X-epic from Chris Yost, Paco Medina & Dalibor Talajic, Marvel is proud to unveil new X-Men Evolutions variants! Brought to you by some of the best artists in the industry, get ready for a unique look at your favorite mutants and their iconic costume designs from every era! No fan can miss out on these great covers spotlighting the rich history of the X-Men while X-Men: First To Last gives fans a chance to relive the exciting action of Xavier’s first class and experience the thrill of Cyclops’ current team!
The amazing image of Storm through the years is by the underrated David Yardin! I am so glad that Marvel hired him to do this variant cover for The Mighty Thor #2. Now if they could get him to draw a Storm ongoing series, that would be a step in the right direction. I love the versions of Storm that Yardin chose to highlight. One subtlety I enjoy is how Ororo’s hands are channeling lightning in every version except for her mohawk self which represents her powerless period (though she started out with her powers when she debuted the ‘hawk). Storm’s is the best of the crop, in my not so humble opinion, but there were definitely some others that I enjoyed.

We continue to celebrate the love I have for Marvel Comics’ Valkyrie with this lovely image of our Chooser of the Slain by Adi Granov! Valkyrie’s braids are flying around her as she aims her sword at her (off-panel) foe. The dynamism and detail of this artwork make it a modern classic in my eyes! Kudos to Granov for an amazing portrait of a fierce character!
This amazing artwork, titled “Welcome to Wakanda,” was created by Christian Tomas as a going away present for Yours Truly. I was checking my Facebook account after WonderCon ended and saw this on my “wall” and was so moved. Receiving this gift was the best way to wrap up an already powerfully uplifting weekend. Thank you, Tomas for your creation! I love it very much!
Christian got the tiara perfectly, didn’t forget the ruby and gave the cape a fantastic billowing quality. His rendition of her hair is unique and we can see one of her lightning earrings within the whiteness. I also enjoy his use of light and shadow. This is a stellar piece of artwork and I am very grateful for such a creative gift!

This past weekend I worked my stuff at the Writers Old Fashioned table, selling Princess Witch Boy comics and candles, and giving Heroic Tarot readings at WonderCon 2011! The awesome science-fiction/pop culture blog io9 named my X-Men Tarot “Best of WonderCon Floor”! That’s me sandwiched in between mainstream movies Green Lantern and Sucker Punch (scroll down for my super cheesy photo) in the title!
Many thanks to everyone who came out to the booth and made a purchase or just said hello! I enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces and met a ton of new ones! Here’s some highlights from my experience!
