It’s Party Time!

Clownin' Around

Clownin’ around at an Alice in Wonderland themed party!

With the holiday season approaching, I have been reflecting on the fun I have bringing Heroic Tarot to house parties and corporate events. This past October I was impressed by the variety of presentation and panache of the homes and businesses to which I was invited. From the gritty streets of SOMA to the prestigious homes of Pacific Heights, the Bay Area has shown me it certainly knows how to party!

One of the October events for which Heroic Tarot provided readings took place in SOMA at a Halloween party for a tech startup. The party began after the workday ended and all of the employees were dressed up in fantastic costumes. I took it as a very good omen that my first client for the evening was a man dressed as Captain Jean Luc-Picard from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Readings took place in an all glass meeting room and two or three of the employees kept track of the sign up sheet for me, ushering in the appropriate person one after the other. Before their readings, many of my clients expressed that they had never had an experience with Tarot before, and afterward told me that they enjoyed the new perspective the reading gave them. I have found that Tarot and tech mixes quite well as both subjects are systems of information that require some degree of analysis. It is not surprising to me that San Francisco holds space for both magic and science!

Join the Faerie Fellowship!

Indi from the Faeries Oracle by Brian Froud

“Nothing can be truer than fairy wisdom.  It is as true as sunbeams.” ~Douglas Jerrold

This month Heroic Tarot celebrates the wisdom of the fae as found in the divination decks of Brian Froud! Famed conceptual designer and costume designer for the films Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal, as well as artist for The Faeries’ Oracle and The Heart of Faerie, writes that “the connection with the faeries is wonderful because it gives us an opportunity to experience the world in an open and connected way.” Froud believes that “there is great wisdom to be gained if we allow them to turn our prejudices and preconceptions upside down.” Heroic Tarot is proud to include them in readings with traditional Tarot cards and the X-Men superhero deck.

Transcend Limitations! Heroic Tarot’s June Schedule

The Devil

“He who is not everyday conquering some fear has not learned the secret of life.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

This month, Heroic Tarot dispels the darkness around the Devil! This Major Arcana card is ruled by Capricorn and represents creating boundaries and limitations in your life. In Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom, Rachel Pollack explains:

The Devil can indicate a narrow materialistic view of life; it can mean any form of misery or depression, especially feeling chained or imprisoned, with the illusion that no alternatives are possible.

22 Mysteries & Then Some

The Wise Fool
“The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery.” ~Anaïs Nin

A traditional Tarot deck consists of 78 cards; Twenty-two of these cards are known as the Major Arcana with titles to indicate their specific symbolism. There are many ways to work with these archetypal energies. Most readers of the Tarot either see the Major Arcana as individual entities or they see them as a progression of meanings. The first perspective understands each card as presenting unique traits or experiences as relevant to a person’s spiritual advancement. For example, the Hermit represents application of knowledge, the Wheel represents a change in circumstances, and so on. This approach considers numbers on each card as significant according to the idea associated with them, instead of seeing the numbers as important due to their succession.

Honor Your Truth! Heroic Tarot’s April Schedule

King of Swords

“Truth without love is brutality, and love without truth is hypocrisy.” ~Warren W. Wiersbe

This month we celebrate the clear thinking of the King of Swords! In order to receive his message, keep in mind that all Kings in the Tarot depict mastery and authority in their suit and in this instance that is Air. Kings establish tradition and sustainability and can represent both yourself and another person in a reading. We do not need to limit our definition of the Kings as solely male either. Often Kings may depict anyone who is “fathering” things into a space of security and established rules.

Maintain Balance! Heroic Tarot’s March Schedule

Temperance

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”  ~Rumi

Do you ever feel like you are in the eye of a hurricane while everyone and everything else is spinning around you? How do find composure within that chaos? The Temperance card of the Tarot holds the key to moderation, reminding us of our vitality and how to balance our mental, physical and emotional well-being. In the image above (drawn by Pamela Colman Smith), we see Raphael, the angel of healing. He stands with one foot in the water and one foot on the shore, illustrating his bridge-building capabilities. He is literally dancing between worlds. He pours water from one cup into another and back again as a symbol of his emotional equilibrium. He releases his feelings in accordance with the other elements in his life and recombines them over and over again to find a new heart-based response. Temperance teaches us to travel the middle road in order to avoid extremes. It is a blending of two ideas or materials into a new form. This is alchemy and it requires optimism, enthusiasm and confidence.
