Heroic Tarot Tuesday: Major Arcana X-Men, Part II

Storm by David Yardin

2 High Priestess: Storm

Today we continue our look at the Major Arcana through the lens of Marvel’s X-Men comic book characters! Last week we examined Professor X as The Magician.  This week we honor the weather manipulating mutant known as Storm!

Born from the union of an American photojournalist and an African princess, Ororo Munroe was worshipped as a goddess in her native Kenya.  On a quest to rescue his original X-Men students, Professor X recruited Ororo, informing her that she was a mutant, not a goddess, and that the world needed her. Storm decided to accompany Charles saying, “You present a most peculiar argument–yet I sense a deep sincerity in your words…Perhaps the time has come for me to leave the nest at last.”

Leave a Trail

The Heart of the Matter Collage Art Sketch Book

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

It is my practice to have a sketch book on my person to record my thoughts or draw ideas.  I am one of those creatures who believes that when the Muse strikes, you must write it down or you deserve the forgetfulness that follows.  This rather peculiar perspective has amounted to a small library of my own journals, bursting with half-formed dreams, unfinished watercolors, notes from books I have read and theories on the Tarot, numerology and astrology.  There are also sketches of wildflowers, superheroes and gods.  Sometimes I tape in an inspirational postcard or magazine page.  A few movie theater stubs are scattered here and there with names scrawled beside them, fellow attendees of that moment in time.  From time to time, I do open one of these books and find renewal.  Mostly, I use my journals to keep me firmly grounded in the present lest my head explode with all of the incoming information.  I like to consecrate each new book with a collage of images that will serve me with fuel until I fill up its contents.  A plain unadorned book simply will not do.  I have to cultivate the personality of the tome before I can interact with it. So many blank pages can be daunting otherwise.

Recently, I made four sketch books, imbuing them with specific stories and spells, and realized that none of them were for me.  I had made them for someone else!  I now present them to you and if you feel so inclined as to desire one for your self or a loved one, you may do so in the stormantic Magick Shop!  You can also click on the titles of the books to get to their individual sale pages. Otherwise, please enjoy my humble presentation.

Storm Sunday: Michael Golden

Michael Golden - Storm

We conclude our recent Michael Golden appreciation with a look at Golden’s interpretation of the X-Men’s Storm!  Above, an inked sketch by the master himself.  Love the pose, the facial structure and the lighting on her costume.  Golden designs Ororo’s tiara much larger than it is usually depicted, but the proportions are great overall.  And like Dave Cockrum (Storm’s creator), Golden gives Storm a massive mane of hair!

Spotlight on Doctor Strange with Michael Golden & Frank Miller!

drstrange portfolio - golden 003

Michael Golden is one of the comic industry’s greats and his depiction of Doctor Strange (among many other characters) is seminal.  A master illustrator, he is often cited as one of Arthur Adams’ influences.  He is also the co-creator of the X-Men’s Rogue!  Today we celebrate a few of his Doctor Strange images from a portfolio he created in the early 1908s.  Above, we have a lovely image of the good Doctor with his disciple and lover Clea!  The detailed designs in this drawing are breathtaking and remind me of J.H.Williams III’s later work on Promethea!

Storm Sunday Extra Extra: Chris Samnee, Part II

storm - samnee

Chris Samnee (rhymes with “omni”) is one of my favorite contemporary artists.  I love this image for the movement implied by the whirlwind surrounding Storm.  Samnee also draws Storm’s tiara in the exact manner as it was created by Storm’s creator Dave Cockrum.

Check out a previous Storm Sunday Extra Extra by Samnee featuring an awesome image of Storm with a black panther.

Storm Sunday Extra: Cliff Chiang

Cliff Chiang is one of the most interesting artists working in comics these days!  Don’t believe me?  Check out his convention sketches on his blog for proof!  His sleek clean lines are gorgeous and there does not seem to be a character that the man cannot draw!  Above, a head shot of mohawk Storm begins our appreciation of Chiang.  But there’s Storm as Janet Jackson, a fastball special, Marvel Girl and more after the jump!
