Today we continue our look at the Major Arcana through the lens of Marvel’s X-Men comic book characters! Thus far we have discussed Professor X as the Magician, Storm as the High Priestess, Jean Grey as the Empress and Cyclops as the Emperor! This week we celebrate the fuzzy elf with a conscience known as Nightcrawler!

The teleporting mutant known as Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, was born to the shape-shifting mutant terrorist Mystique and a demon lord named Azazel. Abandoned by his mother at birth, Kurt was rescued and raised by a sorceress and trained in the circus as an acrobat. It was some time during his years in the carnival that he found faith in the Catholic religion. This connection to a higher source of power would be of great resource to Kurt through many tumultuous years of challenges.

2 High Priestess: Storm

Today we continue our look at the Major Arcana through the lens of Marvel’s X-Men comic book characters! Last week we examined Professor X as The Magician. This week we honor the weather manipulating mutant known as Storm!

Born from the union of an American photojournalist and an African princess, Ororo Munroe was worshipped as a goddess in her native Kenya. On a quest to rescue his original X-Men students, Professor X recruited Ororo, informing her that she was a mutant, not a goddess, and that the world needed her. Storm decided to accompany Charles saying, “You present a most peculiar argument–yet I sense a deep sincerity in your words…Perhaps the time has come for me to leave the nest at last.”

I have been an avid reader of the X-Men comics and a reader of the Tarot since I was in my early teens. I thought it would be an entertaining exercise to “cast” my favorite mutants as The Major Arcana. This is a fun way to learn about the Tarot archetypes if you are an X-Men fan, or a great way learn about some awesome characters if you are a Tarot practitioner. When studying mysticism it is always a good idea to keep mixing it up. It’s important to keep concepts flexible!

Created in 1962 by the artist Steve Ditko, Spider-Man made his first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. Since then, this superhero has gone on to great popularity spawning cartoons, movies (how many reboots are we at now?) and countless comics and toys. Does Spider-Man’s longevity stem from the fact that his iconic wraparound eyes on his mask are based on a prevalent image of an alien?
