Today I took a Mastering Crowdfunding class by comic creator and Kickstarter wizard Alex Woolfson. The event was part of The Isotope Comic Book Lounge’s Isotope University, which offers curriculum that “focuses on practical, real world comics industry knowledge to equip students for success in creating and selling comics. Today’s guest instructor was the author of the yaoi science fiction graphic novel Artifice and the queer superhero series The Young Protectors.

I have a great appreciation for Alan Moore. It is an inarguable fact that he helped transform the medium of comic books into something quasi-respectable. His run on Swamp Thing alone brought a new consciousness to comics. With the help of the inimitable illustrator J. H. Williams III, he created my all time favorite series Promethea. He is the architect behind Watchmen, V for Vendetta, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and From Hell (if you’ve only seen these works adapted as film, you have not experienced the genius of Alan Moore). However, as much as I love Alan Moore the writer, I am most interested in the Alan Moore the magician.

The teleporting mutant known as Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, was born to the shape-shifting mutant terrorist Mystique and a demon lord named Azazel. Abandoned by his mother at birth, Kurt was rescued and raised by a sorceress and trained in the circus as an acrobat. It was some time during his years in the carnival that he found faith in the Catholic religion. This connection to a higher source of power would be of great resource to Kurt through many tumultuous years of challenges.
