In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you.” ~Deepak Chopra
‘Tis the season to navigate chaos. The mass market media holiday blitz can be a challenge on many levels in a variety of ways. However, it is vital now more than ever to remember to find safety amidst the ruckus. This is a perfect time to honor the practice of stillness. For this reason, I chose to spotlight the second Tarot card of the Major Arcana, the High Priestess. In this Rider-Waite-Smith deck image we see a wise woman seated in a temple between two pillars. One is black and one is white, representing the polarities we encounter in life. We experience these opposites and sometimes define them as good or bad, right and wrong, positive and negative, limiting our connection to any true understanding of their roles in our lives.
The High Priestess teaches us to sit in neutrality between these poles and look at what is helpful or unhelpful, or what it working and what is not working. With the power of our inner guide we do not judge the situation or ourselves. We simply see things as they are. Then we are more aware about how this moment affects our thoughts and our feelings. With that awareness we choose to change, allowing the moment to flow into the next experience. We are like the robes of the High Priestess melting into water.
The High Priestess is always in a crossroads. We are as well. The High Priestess has cultivated stillness in order to honor her intuition. It is like Hermann Hesse says, “Within you, there is a sanctuary to which you can retreat at any time and be yourself.” We access this sacred site with stillness. We find a peace within.
If our intention this holiday season is truly “peace on earth,” then it starts on an individual level. Taoism founder Lao Tzu wrote, “At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.” Once you remind yourself of that, and own it as the truth, then the celebrations will really begin!
