White Queen Wednesday: 30 Rock

An Emma Frost Salon
by Ken Kneisel

Welcome to White Queen Wednesday, gentle reader. I imagine you might be wondering what Emma Frost has to do with the NBC television series 30 Rock. Well keep reading and the answer will become clear.

Last season, the show’s fourth, executive Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) began dating icy blonde bitch Avery Jessup (Elizabeth Banks), a conservative CNBC financial news analyst. However, at the time he was already romantically involved with his redheaded high school crush Nancy Donovan (Julianne Moore), the sweet and guileless girl next door.

Do you begin to see what it is about this situation that reminds me of Emma Frost, gentle reader? It’s not too much of a stretch to interpret this love triangle as a reflection of Emma’s romantic entanglement with Scott Summers and Jean Grey, with Jack Donaghy as Scott, Nancy Donovan as Jean and of course Avery Jessup as Emma. Just as it happened in the pages of X-Men, when his two-timing was brought to light, Jack chose the blonde bitch who represents his current station in life over his redheaded high school girlfriend who symbolizes his past.

Beyond the respective hair colors of Jack’s paramours, it was also the way he described Avery to Nancy when she discovered his infidelity that really reminds me of Emma. He said “Her laugh is like music, really mean music. And she always wears high heels because according to her flat shoes are for quitters.” Now doesn’t that sound like a succinct two sentence description of our Emma?

The soap opera love story between Emma and Scott and Jean is arguably the single most defining storyline for the modern depiction of Emma Frost, and continues to color reader perception of her to this day. I have certainly hinted at it several times here on White Queen Wednesday, and someday soon I will have to discuss the subject in much greater detail.

That’s it for this installment of White Queen Wednesday, gentle reader. Join me again next week for more about Emma Frost.

    Interesting parallel.

How do you think Brad/Angelina/JenniferA compares? Maybe something to include in your upcoming more detailed post on this subject?

  2. Ingonyama

A fair bit of irony here:

I got into the X-Men in 1993, a year after the animated series came out. At the time, my favorite movie was Beetlejuice, so Alec Baldwin was my first choice for Cyclops, Nicole Kidman would have made an amazing Jean Grey, and Michelle Pfeiffer was the White Queen. Of course, this was years before Morrison and the love triangle mess, but still, it’s interesting to picture the actors as they were then, involved in the plots as they are now.

Today, Alec looks more like a potential Corsair than a Cyclops (have to see how the man looks with a handlebar mustache :p), but Elizabeth Banks is almost picture-perfect as Emma Frost.
